Candidate for the position of Undergraduate School Representative - School of Nursing & Midwifery (SNAM)

Jennifer Young

Representative for all Nurses and Midwives I will work to make this journey memorable and a little less tough

Hello,

I am a Second Year (September 2019) Adult Nursing student.  From Year One I have been a Class Representative, representing the concerns of my class mates at the SSCC now the SVC and updating them on what was discussed.

During COVID-19 I recognised some of my class members were struggling with isolation and mental wellbeing and I sought to engage with them socially, we had online games nights and online drop in coffee mornings.  In second year, I have also been a Peer Mentor for first year students and have operated an open-door policy where any of my mentees can speak with me about matters concerning them, I have also taken part in drop-in sessions for these students whilst they have been out on placement.

In first year, I helped re-establish the Nursing Society and occupied the role of Secretary and continue to be involved with the Nursing Society in second year all be it to a lesser extent given the limitations that have been brought about by COVID-19.

I consider myself a clear voice of advocacy for the Nursing Students as was demonstrated during Phase 4 of my studies.  I identified many second-year students were struggling with the imminent deadlines for two assignments when trying to meet the demands of placement.  I appealed to the head of Year and the Module Coordinators for which the assignments were for and successfully secured a Cohort wide extension for one of the assignments meaning all second-year students could enjoy Christmas and Boxing Day off before recommencing work on their assignments.

I am passionate about looking after all members of the School of Nursing and Midwifery as we are the future of Nursing and Midwifery.  It is vital that we look after each other especially in these difficult times and I will do all that I can to ensure the mental wellbeing of students is looked after allowing you all to become the best nurses and midwives that you can.  Nobody need feel alone or lonely as there will always be a support network for you to reach out to and obtain support from.

One can only hope that we will return to face to face teaching in some capacity and in the event that this is able to happen I would be keen to establish fun outlets for students.  I have said from day one, nursing and midwifery degrees are very different from other disciplines, we have limited capacity to get involved with University Clubs and Societies.  I will aim to work closely with the Nursing Society and the Midwifery Society to ensure that there are opportunities for us all to let our hair down once in a while.

Please place your trust in me by lending me your vote to become School Representative and I will guarantee you will always have a voice to speak up for you and an ear to listen, a shoulder to lean on and a hand to guide you.
