Fighting for Democratising our University, Financial Support for Marginalised Students, Better & Safer Housing and Work Conditions and Mandatory Consent Training for all! Vote Salim #1 for Equality & Diversity to bring about radical change on campus and make the university listen to student voices.

About Me

I am a third-year student studying International Relations and Conflict, as well as the Chair of the International Students' Association. I co-chaired the Decolonise, Demilitarise, Democratise QUB referendum, which was supported by an overwhelming majority. I am also the Campaigns Officer for Amnesty International UK.

PRIORITIES

Democratise the University

The University's decision making bodies are opaque and lack student representation. I’m pushing for greater representation within the policy making process to ensure that the voices of marginalised communities are heard and acted upon.

Financial Support for Students

In the cost of living crisis, students have faced financial hardship, having to cut down on food and heating. Discrimination is also been a massive challenge, and token initiatives from the university have fallen short. It's time for transformative change – no student should have to endure financial hardship. I'm advocating for substantial financial support, focusing on marginalised communities, and demanding an aid fund for those who have faced discrimination. It's time to prioritise the financial well-being of every student.

Fight Against Exploitative Landlords

Landlords and employers exploit students with unfair work and living conditions. Fair wages, improved safety standards, and safe, accessible housing are non-negotiable demands. I aim to campaign against dodgy landlords and employers through grassroots activism, advocacy, and the Students' Union's resources.

Consent Training

In NI, a staggering 63% of university students have faced unwanted sexual experiences. The university must be a safe space where every student feels respected and protected from harm. Thus, I am committed to ensuring mandatory consent training for all students – an essential defence against sexual misconduct, and a commitment to prioritise the well-being of each individual, both on and off campus.

POLICY INITIATIVES

•          Engage with schools and faculties to undertake a comprehensive review of the curriculum geared towards the inclusion and promotion of diverse voices, including the ethnic minority and queer perspectives.

•          Ensure that there are provisions for multi-faith prayer rooms and quiet areas on campus as part of an overall push for accessibility and inclusion

•          Advocate for trans harm reduction through better trans-inclusive healthcare access, along with accessible mental health resources and gender-affirming safe spaces.

•          Work with the university to improve childcare facilities on campus with a specific focus on catering to the needs of student parents.

  • Host regular collaborative events with the Student Associations tailored towards various student groups, including but not limited to mature students, international students, queer students and students with disabilities.
