Carl Schmitt was a German political philosopher, authoritarian conservative and a vocal critic of parliamentary democracy, liberalism and cosmopolitanism. Schmitt and his work remain deeply controversial due to their association with Nazism, but his ideas remain highly influential, with scholars arguing that his work influenced modern governance in China and Russia, as well as elements of modern American conservatism.
