All members of Queen's University Officer Training Corps are students in tertiary education within Northern Ireland. As a result, Queen's UOTC reflects the cultural diversity of students within Northern Ireland, as well as being one of the best student clubs.  

Queens University Officers’ Training Corps (QUOTC) is an Army Reserve unit that recruits exclusively from Level 3 Education Establishments across Northern Ireland. Within Queens UOTC there is a solid balance of military training and social events all of which you get paid to attend effectively working as a part time job whilst at university. At Queens UOTC there is no obligation in any form to join the Army whether that be full time or as a reservist after your time at University.  

As Queens UOTC is a society at University, we understand that your studies as a student will always come first and as a result there is no minimum day of attendance obligation. However, the training occurs one night a week and usually one or two weekends a month meaning it’s a lot easier to work into your busy schedule and allowing time for you to enjoy and attend other societies too. 

Within your first year as an Officer Cadet you will undergo “Module A” which is a module covering all the basic soldiering skills such as navigation, first aid, administration in the field and some time on the ranges. 

In your second year and beyond as an Officer Cadet you will undergo “Module B” which will develop upon your new skills from Module A but also start to incorporate leadership into the module and you will be developing upon your communication, teamwork and leadership skills both in and out of the field.  

In recent years there have been many chances for Officer Cadets to go abroad firstly there was South Africa which was 2 weeks abroad in a multi-activity adventure training package, Officer Cadets undertook lots of different activities such as rock climbing, hill walking, mountain biking, kayaking and white water rafting. Each year a few Officer Cadets are selected to go to Chile to get some insight into “Escuela Militar del Libertador Bernardo O'Higgins” which is the Chilean Officer Academy, whilst in Chile Officer Cadets get to undergo cross country skiing and a winter survival course. Another yearly opportunity is the Nijmegen marches (International Four Days Marches) which takes place in the Netherlands, during the march the selected Officer Cadets walk 40km each day for 4 days throughout the Netherland countryside and through the local towns experiencing the amazing atmosphere from the crowds gathered out to watch them pass.  

Our summer camps consist of a two-week camp usually split with the first week being the “green” phase where we are in the field using and refining the skills we have learnt throughout the training year. The second week consists of some adventure training and a Corps dinner night where we all get dressed up in formal attire and have a dinner together with both staff and officer cadets. Recent summer camp locations have been in Cyprus, Gibraltar and Longmoor.
