Frequently Asked Questions -
Do I have to be a Psychology or PGR student to join?
Not at all! While the society was set up mainly for postgraduate students in Psychology, we welcome anyone who has an interest in psychology or research more broadly. Most of our events and activities are tailored towards postgrad life (things like presentation practice, socials, and networking), but you don’t need to be a psychology student to benefit from them. If you’re curious, want to meet others in the field, or just want to get involved, you’re more than welcome.
What support can you offer?
As a student-led society, we’re here to create a community, but we’re not qualified to provide formal advice. That means we can’t give guidance on things like dealing with supervisors, applying for funding, finances, visa questions, housing issues, or mental health. What we can do is give you opportunities to meet other postgrad students, share experiences, and feel part of a community.
What is the Wellbeing Officer’s role?
The Wellbeing Officer is a position recommended by the Students’ Union to make sure societies are being mindful of student wellbeing. Our Wellbeing Officer isn’t a trained advisor or counsellor, they’re there as a friendly point of contact if you’re not sure where to turn, but they’re not a substitute for qualified support services.
What kind of events do you run?
We aim to create a mix of academic and social opportunities. On the academic side, we organise presentation practice days where you can present your research in a friendly environment and get constructive feedback on your slides and delivery. On the social side, we run informal meetups, mixers, and community events where you can meet fellow postgrad students, chat about research (or life outside of it), and build connections across different areas of psychology and beyond.
How do I join the society?
Joining is simple, just head to the Queen’s Students’ Union website, search for our society’s page, and sign up through there. You’ll need to log in with your student account, and then you’ll be officially added to our members list. Once you’ve joined, you’ll get updates about events, opportunities, and how you can get involved.
Do I need to pay to join?
Nope! Since we’re a brand-new society, we’re not charging membership fees just yet. We’re still finding our feet, learning what works best, and building up our community. Joining is completely free at the moment — so it’s a great time to get involved and help shape what the society becomes.
