About

Queen’s University Belfast Sailing Club

Whether you’re a complete beginner or have years of racing behind you, QUB Sailing is open to everyone. We train twice a week, compete across Ireland and the UK, and run some of the best socials on campus. It’s about more than just sailing — it’s a team, a community, and an experience you won’t forget.

🛥 Training at Ballyholme Yacht Club

We train on the water twice a week during term time, just a short train ride from Belfast:

  • Wednesdays (2:00 PM – sunset): Mixed-level training for all members

  • Saturdays:

    • Advanced Squad (Team Racers): 9:00 AM – 12:30 PM

    • Beginners & Intermediates: 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM

Sessions are run in Fireflies with qualified instructors and experienced racers. All kit is provided — no need to buy anything. Don’t have transport? No worries. Just hop on the train to Bangor and someone from the club will pick you up.

Never sailed before? That’s what Try Sailing Day is for. We’ll get you on the water with no pressure, no expectations — just a proper introduction to what we do.

🏁 Racing & Competitions

We train for competitive team racing, and each year we compete in top-level student events across Ireland and the UK:

  • All 4 IUSA events (the Irish university circuit)

  • BUCS Qualifiers and Events

  • The legendary Glasgow Grouse

  • Our own QUB Alumni Regatta

  • Women at the Helm

We welcome everyone who’s keen to learn and improve. If you’re new to racing, we’ll teach you. If you’re already racing at a high level, we’ll push you.

🌞 Summer Sail Week Abroad

To cap off the year, we run a week-long yacht trip abroad. Think island hopping, coastal sailing, swimming in clear blue water, and nights out in new places.

No stress, no sailing experience needed — just a willingness to jump in. We’ve done Greece. This year: Croatia.

🍻 Socials That Go Beyond the Typical Night Out

Sailing brings people together, and our socials keep that energy going. Weekly events range from chilled pub trips to themed nights and formal dinners.

At regattas, the socials are just as big as the racing. Formals, ceilidhs, themed parties… you’ll be going home with stories and lasting memories.

⛵ Try Sailing Day

Never sailed before? This is your chance. After Freshers’ Fair, we run a Try Sailing Day so you can get out on the water, meet the team, and see if the club’s for you.

It’s relaxed, informal, and open to all. No kit needed — Just some clothes suitable in case you get wet. Sign up and show up, we will handle the rest.
