Queens Swimming, Waterpolo and Lifesaving Club is one of the longest established club at the University. We hope to allow all members to develop their skills within the various disciplines, improve performance, provide opportunity for members to get involved in various competitions and events and of course to engage in the social elements of the Club!
Swimming - We accept all swimming abilities within the Club from the weaker swimmer right up to the competitive participant. We are a multi stroked club trying to get the ability, fitness and technique of all members improved. We make sure no one is left out and try to do as many group sets as possible making sure everyone can progress. The pool is split up into lanes of ability so swimmers can work with those of a similar standard. We try to vary our sets to make sessions both enjoyable and productive. The biggest event of the year is the Intervarsity Championship, held each year around March time, which involves many universities across Ireland competing against each other in individual events as well as team relays and lifesaving events. The event spans one weekend with the heats taking place on the first day and the finals and lifesaving events on the second day, followed by an awards ceremony and social event that evening. The All-Ireland Intervarsity Championship 2024 competition was held in Cork with members of Queen’s Swimming Club winning 11 medals across a variety of events, which we hope to repeat next year!
Waterpolo - The waterpolo element of the club welcomes all abilities and training involves basic drills to improve technique as well as friendly matches to practice game situations. This year we aim to get more matches organised with local teams in order to increase our experience and improve our play. Our main waterpolo event of the year is the Waterpolo Varsities. There is also a novice competition usually held before Christmas to give beginners a taste of what competitions are like. Last year we won the Waterpolo Varsities, a feat we intend to repeat this year.
Lifesaving - Lifesaving was introduced to the Club in 2010 when the club had 4 members on the NI commonwealth team. We hope that this aspect of the club will provide basic life support and lifesaving skills to students as well as enabling them to compete in the lifesaving events at the Intervarsity Championship. In training we will focus on the skills required for speed lifesaving, building stamina and improving performance for the many multidisciplinary events. Last year four of our club members were represented in the British National Lifesaving Championships in Sheffield. We also offer members the opportunity to sign up for NPLQ Lifesaving courses to enable them to achieve life support and lifesaving qualifications. The NPLQ is a professional qualification that includes a life support module consisting of CPR and First Aid.
Our training times are as follows and all training sessions are held at the PEC pool:
Tues: 8-9.30pm Wed: 2:30-4:30pm
We hope to see you there!
