About

Queen's University student, Fionntán McGarvey died tragically in January 2022 at just 18 years old. Fionntán loved and was loved by so many people with his generosity and love of life prompting him to sign up to the organ donation register. By doing so, in death, Fionntán gave the gift of life to two people in need of life saving kidney donations. In his honour, Fionntán's family chose 'We Are Donors' as the charity best placed to carry on Fionntán's legacy and his significant love for life by raising awareness of organ and blood donation. Their incredible efforts, and that of a whole community, in fundraising and participating in the Belfast City Marathon 2022, has provided the opportunity to establish the 'QUB We Are Donors Fionntán Branch' in the continued hope that this will serve as a fitting and lasting legacy to a beautiful and remarkable young man who will be forever sorely missed by so many.

We Are Donors is a national network of university student groups working to raise awareness of organ and blood donation in order to increase the number of donors across the UK. Each university group organises educational talks and workshops within local schools and universities including, but not limited to, 'know your type' and 'blood donation drives' ran by student ambassadors in partnership with local authorities such as NIBTS.

The We Are Donors Fionntán Branch at QUB work closely with the QUB students union as well as a We Are Donors National Committee based in the UK mainland for supoort and guidance regarding running the society and organising events and workshops. The national committee is made up of doctors, nurses, surgeons and other volunteers who are experts in this area of practice and who take responsibility for providing training and support for students to achieve the We Are Donors mission of making organ and blood donation a national conversation of interest and importance.

By joining the We Are Donors Fionntán branch at QUB you will gain opportunities to help organise, manage and faciliate events, workshops and talks within local schools and universities. As an ambassador, you will be provided with training by our local commitee who will continue to support you in whatever level of commitment/ involvement you feel you can offer to the society. We Are Donors Fionntán Branch promises to be a great opportunity to connect, network and educate while carrying out the core mission of spreading awareness around organ and blood donation while continuing the legacy of young Fionntán McGarvey in a meaningful and fitting manner.
