WoMED aims to:
Promote the personal and professional development of women in Medicine
Educate on matters affecting women in Medicine
Educate on matters affecting women in society
We are passionate about providing opportunities for and increasing collaboration between female medics. Over 50% of medical students and trainee doctors are women, yet less than 1/3 of consultants are female. There are 14,000 less female surgeons than male. We want to level the playing field. We want to support Women in Medicine.
We hold events on three main themes:
Education
Support
Careers
Traditionally in medicine, female patients are treated as ‘the other’, while males are treated as ‘the norm’. Male anatomy, male patients in clinical trials, male boundaries in clinical investigations. As such, female patients are at a higher risk of adverse drug reactions and misdiagnoses. We want to normalise the female patient, and the inequalities that she faces.
We are open to anyone who identifies with our society. We are also open to any male healthcare students who wish to understand their female patients and colleagues better.
If you have any questions about the society, or are interested in collaborating with us on an event, please send us an email or message our Facebook page.
