Embracing the Heterogeneity, Standing in Solidarity
MANIFESTO
Create a forum for Black, Asian and Minority Ethnicity (BAME) students to voice their ideas, concerns and experiences. Based on the ideals of equality, social justice and integrity, I seek to provide better opportunities for under-represented ethnicities in the university.
Actively engage in organising and participating in campaigns arounds the issues faced by the minority ethnicity communities in Belfast and across the world, through effective coordination with the SU Campaigns & Engagement, as well as the chairpeople of the other student associations.
Through effective communication and cooperation with QSU clubs and societies across the spectrum, I seek to consistently represent the community, and raise awareness about the issues we face at all Students’ Union and University meetings.
Call on the SU and the university to formulate a decolonisation framework to ensure equal representation and opportunities. Furthermore, the university must provide greater support to minority ethnicity societies to help create a welcoming atmosphere for new and current students alike. I strongly believe that both nationality and ethnicity based societies are the building blocks for lasting change within the university.
Create handbooks at the school/departmental level for students from BAME communities to have a concrete resource as a reference point. This will help students with the adjustment process, especially when it comes to processing their new surroundings, as well as get support for any issues that may arise. The handbooks will also give special consideration to religious/cultural differences associated with different ethnicities and their daily living practices. Lastly, these ideas will then be contextualised with respect to students’ university experience.
