My Background and Experience in Student Advocacy and Welfare:

Hey! My name is Ruairí and I'm a new MSc International Public Policy student at Queen’s. I’m eager to bring my passion, experience, and dedication to the QSU :) So, my journey in student leadership began during my BA in Government at the University of Galway, where I served as a class rep for two years before being elected as Convenor of the College of Arts on the Executive Committee of the Students' Union. In that role, I represented thousands of students, chaired class rep councils, aided the welfare crew and led a successful campaign to raise awareness about academic integrity and AI in education. This work earned me a spot on the shortlist for the Union of Students Ireland’s Student Achievement Award for Part-Time Officer of the Year in 2024.

Beyond union leadership, I was a Peer-Assisted Learning tutor, mentoring first-year students, and served as a student ambassador, helping new students navigate their academic decisions and anxieties through panel discussions and blog posts. I also co-founded the Swiftie Society, where I took on roles from Treasurer to Event Manager to Auditor, organising community events and fundraisers, while actively participating in the Politics Society and holding the positions of editor and Co-Editor in Chief of The Government Collective, a student-led publication amplifying bold ideas.

At Queen’s, I would love to bring this experience to the table, ensuring every student feels represented, every voice is heard, and creating a dynamic, inclusive campus where students can thrive both academically and socially.

My General Aims:

  • Support students from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
  • Push for extended hours in study spaces and food services.
  • Promote wider use of hybrid learning, including recorded lectures, to improve accessibility.
  • Encourage active engagement among all student representatives.
  • Push for expanded mental health and wellbeing services on campus.
  • Advocate for more timely and comprehensive feedback on continuous assessments.
  • Work with peers on the SU to promote campaigns.
