As a person of colour, my experience in leadership roles and student advocacy, coupled with my own understanding of the challenges faced by new students from diverse backgrounds, positions me to effectively lead this association.
In this role, I will focus on promoting cultural awareness and understanding across the university community. This includes organizing events and initiatives that celebrate the diversity of our student body, fostering cross-cultural dialogue, and addressing the specific challenges ethnically diverse students face. I aim to work closely with university leadership to ensure policies and practices reflect the needs of our community, including addressing issues related to racial discrimination, representation, and access to mental health support.
Especially in the light of recent race riots across the UK, it’s important to make the students feel safe and effective liaison with the university is one of the ways to mitigate any concerns. Another essential part of my strategy will be to enhance collaboration between the Ethnically Diverse Students’ Association and other student societies, ensuring that the concerns of ethnically diverse students are addressed in broader university decisions. I will also work to create mentorship programs that connect students with professionals and alumni who share their backgrounds, providing guidance in navigating academic and career challenges.
Through these efforts, I hope to build a stronger, more inclusive university community where every student feels respected, supported, and empowered to succeed.
