Home Away From Home – Your Voice for Better Accommodation at Queen's!

Introduction: Hello! My name is Muhammad Haris, and I am running for the position of Queen's Accommodation Representative on the Students' Union Council at Queen's University Belfast. As a student who understands the importance of a comfortable and supportive living environment, I am dedicated to advocating for the needs and concerns of all students regarding accommodation. Together, we can create a better living experience for everyone at Queen's.

Vision: My vision is to ensure that every student at Queen's has access to safe, affordable, and quality accommodation that enhances their overall university experience. I believe that a positive living environment is crucial for academic success, personal well-being, and building a sense of community among students.

Key Objectives:

  1. Improving Accommodation Quality and Affordability:

    • Advocate for affordable accommodation options that meet the diverse needs of all students, including postgraduate, international, and undergraduate students.
    • Work with the university to ensure that accommodation facilities are regularly maintained, safe, and equipped with necessary amenities.
    • Push for transparency in accommodation fees and policies, ensuring that students are well-informed about what they are paying for.
  2. Enhancing Communication and Support:

    • Establish clear communication channels between students and accommodation services, ensuring that concerns and issues are addressed promptly and effectively.
    • Create an online platform where students can share their accommodation experiences, provide feedback, and suggest improvements.
    • Organize regular meetings and forums where students can voice their concerns directly to accommodation management.
  3. Building a Sense of Community:

    • Foster a sense of belonging and community within accommodation halls by organizing social events, activities, and workshops that bring students together.
    • Encourage collaboration among residents to create a supportive environment where students can connect, share experiences, and build friendships.
    • Promote initiatives that facilitate cultural exchange and inclusivity among students living in shared accommodation.
  4. Addressing Safety and Well-being:

    • Advocate for enhanced safety measures in accommodation facilities, including better lighting, security personnel, and emergency protocols.
    • Promote mental health and well-being initiatives within accommodation halls, including access to support services, workshops, and peer support groups.
    • Ensure that students feel comfortable raising safety concerns and that appropriate actions are taken to address them.
  5. Streamlining Accommodation Processes:

    • Work to simplify the accommodation application and allocation processes, making it easier for students to secure suitable living arrangements.
    • Advocate for improved resources and support for students facing housing challenges, including assistance with finding alternative accommodation when needed.
    • Collaborate with university departments to streamline communication regarding accommodation updates, policies, and changes.
  6. Encouraging Sustainability:

    • Promote sustainable practices within accommodation facilities, such as recycling programs, energy-saving initiatives, and awareness campaigns on reducing waste.
    • Advocate for the implementation of green spaces and eco-friendly facilities within accommodation areas to enhance students' living environments.
    • Encourage student involvement in sustainability initiatives, fostering a culture of environmental responsibility.

Conclusion: As your Queen's Accommodation Representative, I am committed to ensuring that every student has access to safe, affordable, and quality accommodation that supports their academic journey and personal well-being. Together, we can create a living environment that not only meets our needs but also enhances our university experience.

I humbly ask for your support in this important role. Let’s work together to make our accommodation at Queen's a better place for everyone.

Thank you!
