Vote Angela #1 for SMED Rep!
I will unite and equally represent the voices of medical, dentistry, and biomedical students, ensuring the unique needs of each course are heard and addressed!
I will push for reduced placement costs, stronger dentistry and biomedical science representation in societies and more research opportunities!

My Motivation
Through my roles as Course Representative for Medicine and member of the BMA Northern Ireland Medical Students Committee, I have listened to students across all year levels highlighting areas in need of improvement. I want to serve as SMED representative to work with students, faculty, and the SU to ensure these voices are heard and acted upon. I’d also like to use this role to prioritize the equal representation of dentistry and biomedical students alongside medical students.
About Me
My name is Angela John and I’m currently a third-year medical student. I currently represent medical students both locally and nationally, serving as course representative for medicine over the past 2 years and serving on the BMA Northern Ireland Medical Students Committee.
During my time at QUB, I’ve been involved several projects including:
-
Improving student assessment feedback reports
-
Efforts to reduce placement travel costs (BMA NIMSC)
-
Integrating sustainable healthcare within the medical curriculum
-
Improving the student experience as a student experience assistant at the SU
My Aims
Better (cheaper) placement travel and housing options
I will push for fairer placement allocations that considers distance, commute time, costs, public transport accessibility and the students’ overall schedule to prevent placement timetables that cause excessive travel or travel to inaccessible areas. I will also push for better support from the school and placement providers in ensuring students find safe and affordable housing in all peripheral placements.
Stronger dentistry and biomedical sciences representation in societies
QUB lacks societies tailored towards dentistry and biomedical students, preventing opportunities for students to explore these subjects beyond the curriculum. I will support the establishment of more dentistry and biomedical science societies.
More research opportunities
Several students have highlighted a need for increased professional development opportunities, particularly in regards to academic medicine. I will fight for more summer studentship opportunities and the integration of research-related teaching, such as research skills, in the medical curriculum, allowing more students to explore academia and equipping them with the skills to pursue a career in research.
If you’d like to see these changes and many more in the upcoming academic year, vote Angela #1 for SMED rep!
