As a first year law and politics student and a member of the rowing club and ADR society here at Queens, I understand how demanding our schedules as law students can be. Like many of you, I have no parent or relative in the industry and even if you do, this a very nuanced discipline, one which is new to everyone. This is where we lay the foundations for our future careers. Therefore I'm sure you'll agree,we could use all the help we can get! I myself have first hand experience of receiving an assignment back and feeling no more informed on what I need to do to improve than before. I've listened to the many speakers tell us about the million or so things we need to do outside of our degree to obtain a job after university. Law can be a stressful degree. But it does not have to be. This is where I come in. As Representative of the School of Law, I would work tirelessly to make improvements within the school to save you time and ensure that you can focus on achieving your full potential (with minimal headaches). I have a background in debating, youth politics and stood as head of student council of my school, therefore I am no stranger to addressing important issues to an audience and relaying the concerns of others. I have a very loud voice, please let me put it to good use.
My goals;
- I will advocate for better organisation of the module pages, so that you spend more time actually getting work done than looking for that module handbook that is hidden in the depths of Canvas.
- Better guidance for preparing for exams, in the form of past papers, a more descriptive syllabus and/or lectures focused on helping us better understand what is required of us as law students
- Clearer module objectives at the start of term, so you are not scrambling to understand your assignments/exams at the end of term
- More communication between schools to avoid deadline clashes for multidisciplinary law students (ie law with spanish/french/politics)
- Better access to feedback following the grading of assignments, so we as student can better understand our grades and utilise this feedback to progress as law students and achieve firsts!
- Help improve key modules, focusing on the way they can be better developed and delivered, especially in lectures
A solid foundation is key in life. This applies to everything from ideas to houses to our futures. Queen's University Belfast Law School is ranked 9th in the UK, which means that we as students are some of the best and brightest of this generation, therefore, I want to see that every law student reaps the full benefits of what this institution has to offer. I want to ensure that we lay down such a solid foundation that others struggle to keep up with us.
Already, I can see so many ways in which we can further improve the School of Law here. I truly believe I would be the perfect candidate to advocate for the concerns and priorities of Queen's law students, because I am approachable, reliable, persistent and passionate about progress.
Please don't hesitate to come chat with me if there is anything you would like to discuss, I am often found chatting outside Elmwood Hall well after the lecture has finished!
If you resonate with anything I have said here, then please consider voting for me, Aoife Grogan, in this election. Thank you very much!
