Hiya! I'm Chloe, a BA Film Studies & Production student and I am standing to be your School of Arts, English and Languages Undergraduate Representative next year.
But why should I be the one to represent you?
I am a Course Representative, so I have been listening to everyone's opinions and experiences on my course and at meetings. Meaning I have already contributed to the AEL Student Voice Committee, heard first-hand about issues that are affecting students in our school and seen reoccurring issues that don't seem to have been solved yet. I am a very friendly person so you can always approach me. I want to make a positive impact in the school, and to work towards making our uni life better: (of course, if there is anything I've missed or you have any questions, feel free to grab me if I'm around, or reach out to me)
- We're amid a cost of living crisis, so the cost of looking after ourselves is incredibly high without the pressure of hidden costs in our degrees. Sure, materials and coursework that requires extra spending is part of "the arts", but I'm campaigning to address hidden costs and combat them for you.
- From my time on the SVC I noticed that we need more employment and employability support:
- Work with the SU to hold networking events/mixers and build networking skills/opportunities in our school.
- Campaign for more employer events/opportunities, like an AEL opportunity during Work Shadowing Week to give us a taste at life in our chosen fields and help build professional connections.
- Advocate for more career's connections to employers in the fields of Arts, English and Languages. To support students with finding an industry relevant employer for work placement modules, and to campaign for AEL specific careers employability events.
- Assignments. Even if we can work towards them over the semester, we will be revising and editing final drafts before we submit them. Not to mention, we are have a large number of Joint Honours students taking different subjects, and we need staff to better coordinate our submission windows. I will work with our departments to address the ongoing issue of bunched up assignment deadlines.
- Improve and bring in more student supports:
- Learning: make accessing recorded lectures more straightforward, to ensure classes are recorded across disciplines, improve study spaces.
- Formal: as formal season approaches, a lot of us are relying on societies to host formals so that we can attend one, or to go as a friends plus one. Whereas other schools have hosted formals. I will campaign to have an AEL formal organised because I think we all should be able to go to the ball :]
Of course, last but not least, I want to amplify the student voice. If I'm elected I will endeavor to bring positive changes for you, and advocate for the issues most effecting you here at Queen's. I will do my best to keep you in the loop with what is happening in your school, and I will always be there to lend a hand with any issues that arise; however I can help.
So, I hope to see you next year as your Undergraduate SAEL Student Rep!
