Student Associations

Student Associations

Student Associations are student-led groups who are the recognised campaigning and community networks for specific groups within the Students’ Union.

They make sure that the voices of our diverse student body are heard and fed back to the University and beyond.

Any student can join any Student Association and become involved in their activities.

You’ll meet loads of like-minded individuals and work on issues that matter to you.

Frequently Asked Questions

We've put together some answers to Frequently Asked Questions

They should help answer some of your queries about the elections.

  • What Are Student Associations?

Student Associations are student-led groups. They represent certain groups of students and advocates and campaign on issues relating to those groups.

Associations are organised by student-led committees and are largely autonomous; set their own goals; plan their own activities; and manage their own budget.

They are each led by a Student Association Chairperson and coordinated by an Executive Committee and operate like student-led Clubs & Societies.

They have access to Students’ Union resources and are governed by the Rules of the Students’ Union, including the Rules which apply to Student Societies.

Student Associations are recognised as the formal campaigning and community networks for underrepresented groups within the Students’ Union.

  • What Do They Do?

Each Student Association is different planning and organising its own activities. Examples of things they can do are:

    • Organise events for Student Association members to meet each other
    • Find out the key issues of concern to their members
    • Start campaigns on issues to improve the lives of their members
    • Provide educational / informational resources to their members
    • Work with the Students’ Union and / or University to improve the student experience of their members

The Student Association Chairpersons can also work together to find areas of common interest across all Student Associations and directly raise issues to the Students’ Union Officers and to the Students’ Union Council.

  • How Do I Join a Student Association?

You can join by contacting an Association directly and an Association committee member will help you to sign up. It could just be as easy as emailing them or attending an event.

Joining is free and easy! You can do it all online from an association’s webpage.

Joining up can mean as little or as much commitment as you wish.

You are not obliged to attend any events or to get involved in anything you do not wish to do so.

  • How Do I Find Out More?

If you are interested in getting involved in a particular Student Association, you can contact them directly.

If you are interested in finding out more about Student Associations generally, you can contact the SU Voice team in the Students’ Union.
