    Getting Involved in Campaigning

Passionate about the issues? Join a campaign and help get students voting.

In addition to making your voice heard through voting, you can participate in campaigns to inspire others to vote. Explore our our campaigning guide for practical tips and strategies to engage students.

    Participation in the All-Student Vote

Queen’s students can vote and campaign in the All-Student Vote. Students can participate individually or as part of an official campaign team, provided they comply with the All-Student Vote Rules.

Students of St. Mary's University College, Stranmillis University College, INTO at Queen's, and students of other institutions who are studying at Queen's may not run or vote in these elections.

While the Students’ Union cannot restrict external individuals or groups from expressing opinions on the vote, any rule violations by non-students will be investigated as if committed by a student. Such breaches could result in sanctions against official campaign teams or impact the validity of the vote.

    Support for Official Campaign Teams

Official campaign teams receive the following support from the Students’ Union:

    • Printed materials:
      • 200 A3 posters (single-sided, colour)
      • 500 A4 posters (single-sided, colour)
      • 1,000 A5 flyers (double-sided, black and white)

No other groups are permitted to use printed materials. Only materials printed by the Students’ Union for official campaigns may be used. Any independent printing or distribution of materials by individuals or groups is prohibited and will be treated as a breach of the All-Student Vote Rules.

    • Online presence:
      • Space on the Students’ Union website and the online voting platform to present their position to voters.
      • Additional opportunities to communicate with students may also be provided by the Students’ Union.

    Communication With Campaign Teams

The Students’ Union supports recognized campaigners for both sides of the All-Student Vote. To contact lead campaigners, reach out to the SU Voice team, which will forward your correspondence.

Participation of Clubs, Societies, and Student Associations in the All-Student Vote

Students’ Union Clubs, Societies, and Student Associations are permitted to participate in the All-Student Vote. They may support specific positions, encourage members to vote, and recommend voting for or against a particular stance.

A decision to participate must be approved by the Club, Society, or Association’s Committee and formally recorded in meeting minutes. These records may be requested at any time by the Returning Officer or as evidence in an Election Court.

Once formally approved, Clubs, Societies, and Associations may communicate their position to members using channels such as email or social media. However, they are not allowed to produce printed or digital campaign materials or use any organisational resources, financial or otherwise, to support an All-Student Vote campaign.

All-Student Vote - Overview

All-Student Votes (sometimes called referendums) give you the ultimate say in the big decisions in your Students’ Union. Any student can propose (and vote in) an All-Student Vote – the highest decision-making body in the Union.

If you have a campaign that you want the student body to support, you can demand that an All-Student Vote is held, by either:

  • Getting the signatures of 2.5% of the student population at Queen’s
  • Asking Student Council to call an All-Student Vote

If you want to call an All-Student Vote, contact the SU Voice team. They can advise you in confidence before you get started.
